Oldest County in Chiayi and 4 Other Cities in Taiwan Enter Super-Aged Society Ahead of Schedule.
The National Development Council has estimated that Taiwan will enter a super-aging society by 2025. According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of the Interior, Chiayi County had the highest percentage of elderly population in Taiwan last year, reaching 21.68%, followed by Taipei City at 20.91%, which is the highest among the six municipalities.
According to international definitions, a society with 7% of its population aged 65 or over is considered an “aging society”, while a society with 14% is a “super-aging society”. The latest statistics from the Ministry of the Interior show that the proportion of elderly population in Taiwan was 17.56% at the end of last year.
As of the end of last year, four counties and cities had entered the super-aging society ahead of schedule, including Chiayi County with 21.69%, Taipei City with 20.91%, Nantou County with 20.13%, and Yunlin County with 20.12%. The counties and cities with the lowest proportion of elderly population were Hsinchu County at 13.64%, Lienchiang County at 14%, Hsinchu City at 14.16%, and Taoyuan City at 14.28%. Even the youngest county or city in Taiwan has entered the aging or super-aging society according to international definitions.
Hsinchu County has the youngest population, but also experiences aging with 13.6% of its population being elderly.
Among the six municipalities, Taipei City has the highest proportion of elderly population, followed by Kaohsiung City at 18.33%, Tainan City at 18.03%, New Taipei City at 17.05%, Taichung City at 15.08%, and Taoyuan City at 14.28%. However, in terms of the number of elderly people, New Taipei City has the most with over 680,000, followed by Taipei City with over 510,000.
According to the latest statistics, the top five counties and cities with the highest proportion of 0-6 year olds are Hsinchu County at 6.82%, Hsinchu City at 6.71%, Taoyuan City at 6.3%, Taichung City at 5.85%, and Changhua County at 5.47%. The counties and cities with the lowest proportion are Chiayi County at 3.69%, Keelung City at 4.09%, and Kinmen County at 4.13%. As for the call for county and city governments to take care of children aged 0-6, Hsinchu County and Taoyuan City have a higher proportion of pre-school children.
